I AM” SERIES
I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE
John 14:1-6; key verse: v. 6, “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Introduction:
Here is some good news, news that will ease your troubled heart, v. 1, Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.” News that will cause you to rejoice and be glad, Psalm 40:16a, “Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee:”
Jesus has declare that He is everything that we need, 2 Corinthians 9:8, “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:”
I. I AM THE WAY
A. The Church is not the way, but rather the one who has the mission of carrying the message of “the way” to the world, Matthew 28:19-20, “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
1. To make disciples… that is, preach the gospel to every creature.
2. To baptize those disciples… after salvation.
3. To teach those disciples all things regarding the Scriptures.
B. Jesus is “the way”,
1. He is the entrance to heaven, not Saint Peter, John 10:9-10, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. 10The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.”
a. Jesus is the entrance by which one enters into eternal life,
b. Jesus came that we “might have life,” v. 10, “I am come that they might have life.”
c. This is an abundant life, v. 10, “and that they might have it more abundantly.”
d. In this abundance there is peace.
2. Jesus is “the way of holiness,” Isaiah 35:8, “And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein.”
a. God expects His people to be holy, 1 Peter 1:15-16, “But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.”
b. The believer was created in true holiness, Ephesians 4:24, “And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”
II. I AM THE TRUTH
A. Jesus is full of truth, John 1:14, 17, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. 17For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.”
B. The truth bring freedom, John 8:32, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
1. Free from the penalty of sin, Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
2. Free from the guilt of sin, Psalm 34:22, “The LORD redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate. [guilty]
III. I AM THE LIFE
A. There is life in Jesus, John 5:21, “For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.”
B. This life is ETERNAL, John 10:28, “And I give unto them eternal life; c, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”
1. This is security, “and they shall never perish.”
2. Even if he dies he is still safe in Jesus Christ, John 11:25, “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: 26And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?”
IV. NO MAN COMETH UNTO THE FATHER BUT BY ME
A. This statement nullifies all other ideas about the WAY OF SALVATION! Acts 4:12, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”
B. Jesus is “the way, the truth, and the life, no man cometh unto the Father, but by me”
CONCLUSION:
There is no other way to heaven except by Jesus Christ. Many have tried religion, good works, philosophy, etc., all of which are failures.
Only Jesus Christ can save a soul from Hell. He says, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28.
