LORD, WHO HATH BELIEVED OUR REPORT?- – JOHN 12:37-43

LORD, WHO HATH BELIEVED OUR REPORT?
JOHN 12:37-43
Introduction:
We have here the honor done to our Lord Jesus by the Old Testament prophets, who foretold and lamented the infidelity of the many that believed not on him. It was indeed a dishonor and grief to Christ that his doctrine met with so little acceptance and so much opposition.
That same doctrine continues to rejected by many today, however, many have received Christ as their Savior seeing that say glory that Isaiah saw so many years ago.
I. NATION UNBELIEF
John 1:11, ” He came unto his own, and his own received him not.”
A. They did not believe, v. 37.
1. They would not believe, Luke 22:67, “Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe:”
a. They had seen the miracles, Acts 2:22, “Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:”
b. Many of them had seen Lazarus whom Jesus raised from the dead, John 12:9, “Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.”
2. They chose not to believe, John 5:40, “And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.”
a. They love the darkness, John 3:19, “And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.”
b. They prefer the wages of sin, Romans 6:23, “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
B. They were blind and deaf to God’s Word, Matthew 13:14-15, “And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: 15 For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.”
II. LORD, WHO HATH BELIEVED OUR REPORT?
Isaiah 53:1, “Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?”
A. They have not obeyed the Gospel, Romans 10:16-17, “But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? 17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
B. His report was that of the Glory of the Son of God, Isaiah 6:1-5, “In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. 2 Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly. 3 And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. 4 And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. 5 Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.”
1. Isaiah had seen Jesus Christ in His glory, Ephesians 1:18, “The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints.”
2. He had seen the Prince of the kings of the earth, Revelation 1:5, “And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,”
3. Isaiah was overwhelmed by the Glory of the Messiah, Psalm 19:1-3, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork. 2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. 3 There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.
C. Yet his report was not believed by most, vs. 39-40; Romans 11:8, “(According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.”
III. GOD ALWAYS HAS A REMNANT
Isaiah 37:31-32, “And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward: 32 For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall do this.”
A. Some believed among the chief rulers, v. 42.
1. Nicodemus believed among others, John 19:39, “And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.”
2. Others were afraid of being put out of the synagogue, John 16:2, “They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.”
3. However, some loved men’s praise more than God’s praise, v. 43; Matthew 6:2, “Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.”
CONCLUSION:
Men still love the praise of men rather than the praise of God. Israel is still blind, but not for long. God will redeem His people.
In the mean time the Gospel of Christ continues to be preached and man is left with a choice. Either serve God or mammon.

KNOWING THE SHEEP AND BEING KNOWN OF THEM- – JOHN 10:11-18

KNOWING THE SHEEP AND BEING KNOWN OF THEM
JOHN 10:11-18
Key verse: vs. 14, “I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.”
Introduction:
One of the great blessings of being a born-again Christians is the fact that not only do we know Christ as our Savior, but that He knows US. We are not just a number as is the case with man, but we are known by name. Luke 10:20 tells us to, “rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.”
Another great blessing is the fellowship or communion that the believer has with the Lord. His compassion and care for us is amazing.
I. JESUS KNOWS HIS OWN
A. The Lord knows those that are His, 2 Timothy 2:19, “Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”
1. The foundation of God stands steady, 1 Corinthians 3:11, “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.”
a. That foundation is sure for God does not change, Hebrews 6:18-19, “That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: 19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;”
b. The foundation of God is like a rock, Matthew 7:25, “And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.”
2. Depart from evil, Proverbs 3:7-8, “Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. 8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.”
B. He knows His children intimately, Revelation 2:2, “I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:”
1. He knows our frame, our limitations, Psalm 103:14, “For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.”
a. The Lord is full of compassion, Psalm 78:38, “But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath. 39 For he remembered that they were but flesh; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again.”
b. The Lord is longsuffering with us, 1 Timothy 1:16, “Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.
2. He knows the secrets of our heart, Psalm 44:21, “Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.”
a. The Lord knows the good and the bad, Ecclesiastes 12:14, “For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”
b. He sees our ways, Job 31:4-5, “Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps? 5 If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;”
II. FELLOWSHIP WITH OUR SAVIOR
A. The Lord observes us with the EYE of FAVOR, Psalm 17:9, “Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings,”
1. We have been justified by His grace, Romans 3:24, “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:”
2. We are accepted by Him, 2 Corinthians 5:8-9, “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. 9 Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.”
3. We are loved by Him, 1 John 4:10, “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”
a. His love is based on truth, 1 John 2:4-5, “He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.”
b. His love is based on sacrifice, John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
B. We observe the Lord with the EYE of FAITH.
1. Salvation is by faith in Christ, Galatians 3:26, “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.”
2. Christ lives in our heart by faith, Ephesians 3:17-19, “That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.”
3. We are kept by the power of God through faith, 1 Peter 1:5, “Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”
4. We have access to the throne of grace by faith, Hebrews 4:16, “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
5. By faith our eyes have been enlightened, Ephesians 1:18,“The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,”
CONCLUSION:
The Lord knows those that are His. He loves them with an everlasting love that is sealed by the Holy Spirit of God. While we see Him through the Eye of Faith, He sees us through the Eye of Love. He knows all there is to know about us and loves us still.

JESUS PREDICTS OF HIS BETRAYAL- – JOHN 13:18-30

JESUS PREDICTS OF HIS BETRAYAL
JOHN 13:18-30

Introduction:

Jesus had just said that blessedness comes through obedience, v. 17, “If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.” Now He added that there would be no blessedness for one of the disciples.

His selection of Judas was not an accident or a failure in God’s plan. The Lord knew very well what He was doing when came to this earth and He knew the Father’s will.

I. JESUS CHOSE A BETRAYER AMONG HIS TWELVE DISCIPLES IN ORDER TO FULFILL THE SCRIPTURES.

A. His choice was a deliberate choice, John 6:70-71, “Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? 71 He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.”

1. Jesus’ call to the twelve was not to salvation, but to service, 1 Corinthians 7:22-23, “For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant, is the Lord’s freeman: likewise also he that is called, being free, is Christ’s servant. 23 Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men.”

2. The Lord knew what the service of Judas would be, John 13:2, 27, “And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him; 27 And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly. “

B. His choice fulfilled the Scriptures, Psalm 41:9, “Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.”

1. Judas was a tragic figure, influenced by Satan; yet he was responsible for his own evil choices, John 12:4-6, “Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, which should betray him, 5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.”

2. Judas had “lifted up his heal against” the Lord, John 13:18, “I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.”

II. JESUS WAS BETRAYED IN THE SAME MANNER AS DAVID

A. David was betrayed by his friend and counselor, 2 Samuel 16:21, “And Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Go in unto thy father’s concubines, which he hath left to keep the house; and all Israel shall hear that thou art abhorred of thy father: then shall the hands of all that are with thee be strong.”

1. At the time of Absalom’s revolt Ahithophel deserted David, Psalm 55:12-14,“For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him: 13 But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance. 14 We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.”

2. However, David was aware of his betrayer as Jesus was aware of Judas’ intentions, 2 Samuel 15:31, “And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.”

B. So Judas, Jesus’ close companion, betrayed Him, Matthew 26:48-49, “Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he: hold him fast. 49 And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, master; and kissed him.”

1. Judas had asked at the supper, “Master, is it I?” Matthew 26:25, “Then Judas, which betrayed him, answered and said, Master, is it I? He said unto him, Thou hast said.”

2. At the Lord’s betrayal Jesus showed His love for Judas even then, Matthew 26:50, “And Jesus said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands on Jesus, and took him.”

a. Jesus would teach us under the greatest provocation TO FORBEAR (TO REFRAIN FROM; TO AVOID)…

1) Bitterness, Psalm 73:21, “Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my reins.”

2) Evil-speaking, Psalm 64:3, “Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words:”

3) But rather, to show meekness, Psalm 37:11, “But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.”

b. Jesus “calls him friend, because he furthered his sufferings, and so befriended him; whereas, he called Peter Satan for attempting to HINDER HIM—M. Henry

C. Judas Iscariot fulfilled Scripture and glorified the Son of God without knowing it, John 13:31-32, “Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32 If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.”

CONCLUSION:

The Lord in His sovereignty chose the men He needed to accomplish the Father’s will. Judas Iscariot was chosen with the rest and had the same opportunities, as did the other twelve Apostles, to know Jesus Christ as Savior.

However, Judas did not trust the Lord as his Savior and ultimately betrayed the Lord for 30 pieces of silver fulfilling the Word of God, Zechariah 11:12-13, “And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver. 13 And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the LORD.”

JESUS PRAYS FOR HIS OWN- – JOHN 17:1-5

JESUS PRAYS FOR HIS OWN
JOHN 17:1-5

Introduction:

This is the real “Lord’s Prayer” and is often called the High Priestly Prayer of Christ. Here He prays first for Himself and then for His own – the disciples, v. 6, “I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.” And He also prays for all who will believe in Him in the future, v. 20, “Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;”
I. JESUS APPROACHES THE FATHER
A. Through their Father-Son relationship, Matthew 6:9, “After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.”
1. We approach the Father in the name of Jesus because of our relationship with Him, John 15:16, “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.”
2. He is our Mediator between God and man, 1 Timothy 2:5, “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;”
B. Jesus used the word “Father” three other times in this prayer…
1. Jesus prayed for the glory that He and the Father had in eternity past, John 17:5, “And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.”
2. He prayed that the disciples would be unified as He and the Father, John 17:21, That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.”
3. He prayed that they might be with Him, John 17:24, “Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.”
II. THE HOUR HAD COME
A. To glorify the Son by redeeming man from his sins, v. 1; John 12:27, “Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour.”
1. Jesus knew what lay ahead, John 13:21, “When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.”
2. He knew that He was to die for our sins, Psalm 88:3, “For my soul is full of troubles: and my life draweth nigh unto the grave.”
B. “I have glorified you on the earth,” v. 4; John 12:28, “Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying , I have both glorified it , and will glorify it again.”
C. I have finished the work, v. 4.
1. He had kept God’s commandments, John 15:10, “If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.”
2. He had done the will of God, John 4:34, “Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.”
a. His “meat” was to do God’s will, John 4:32, “But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.”
b. His goal was to please the Father, John 8:29, “And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.”
c. His determined purpose was to finish God’s work, John 17:4, “I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.”
D. That the Son might GLORITY the Father, v. 1; John 13:31-32, “Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32 If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.”
1. God had glorified the Lord Jesus, Acts 3:13, “The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go.”
2. God has exalted Him above every name, Philippians 2:9-11, “Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
3. God has raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, 1 Peter 1:21, “Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.”
CONCLUSION:
Jesus is glorified in the saints also. That is the primary purpose of our being on this earth, v. 10, “And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.”

JESUS MAKES MORE DISCIPLES- – JOHN 3:22–4:4

JESUS MAKES MORE DISCIPLES
JOHN 3:22–4:4
Introduction:
This is the early Judean ministry of the Lord Jesus. At the outset John the Baptist was still preaching in Judea also.
The ministry of the Lord was beginning to take hold and he was taking advantage of what John had done and many began to turn to Jesus. John’s disciples were directed to follow Jesus and He began to have much success in Judea.
I. ALL MEN COME TO JESUS
A. John bears witness of the Light, John 1:7, 9, “The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. 9That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.”
1. John was preparing the way, John 1:15, “John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me,”
2. John was sent before the Lord, Isaiah 40:3, “The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.”
B. The concern to the Religious leaders, John 11:48, “If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.”
1. The world is gone after him, John 12:19, “The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? behold, the world is gone after him.”
2. During Paul’s ministry, Acts 19:26-27, “Moreover ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands: 27So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.”
II. THE FRIEND OF JESUS
A. John reminds his disciples:
1. I am not the Christ, John 1:20, “And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.”
2. I am the friend of the Bridegroom, John 3:29, “He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.”
3. I must decrease, John 3:30, “He must increase, but I must decrease.”
B. John Baptist advances Christ before his disciples:
1. He is greater than Jonah, Matthew 12:41, “The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.”
2. He is greater than Solomon, Matthew 12:42, “The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.”
3. He instructs his disciples concerning the dignity of Christ’s person, John 3:31, “He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.”
III. JESUS DOES NOT BAPTIZE
A. His ministry was successful, but not without opposition, Psalm 110:2-3, “The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies. 3Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.”
1. The sudden prominence of Jesus, evidenced by the growth of His followers, caused the Pharisees to take special notice of Him.”
2. This is when the Jews began to persecute the Lord, John 7:6, “Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready. 7The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.”
B. “Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,” John 3:26, “And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.” John 3:22, “After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.”
1. “Jesus himself baptized not,” John 4:2, “(Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,)”
2. Peter’s ministry, Acts 10:48, “And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.”
3. Paul’s ministry, 1 Corinthians 1:13-17, “Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? 14I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius; 15Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name. 16And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other. 17For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.”
CONCLUSION:
The Lord moves to His next project, which was to reach the Gentiles, John 4:3-4, “He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee. 4And he must needs go through Samaria.” He is going to Galilee by way of Samaria. This left His disciples amazed.
