GREAT BIBLE WORDS
COME UNTO ME
Matthew 11:28
Matthew 11:28
Introduction:
“The cry of the Christian religion is the gentle word, “Come.” The Jewish law harshly said, “Go, take heed unto thy steps as to the path in which thou shalt walk. Break the commandments, and thou shalt perish; keep them, and thou shalt live.”
“The law was a dispensation of terror, which drove men before it as with a scourge; the gospel draws with bands of love.” —Spurgeon
I. IN THE FIRST MOMENTS OF SPIRITUAL LIFE WE HEAR CHRIST SAYING, “COME UNTO ME.”
A. He bids us to come to Him for rest:
1. We were loaded down with the burden of sin and He offered His help, John 6:37, “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.”
2. Those who have followed “good works” always feel that something is lacking, Mark 10:20-21, “And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth. 21- Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.”
3. He invites them to “come, follow me,” Luke 18:22, “Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.”
B. Those that have spiritual thirst He invites them to “come unto me and drink,” John 7:37, “In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.”
1. The woman at the well desired of the water of life, John 4:10, “Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.”
2. If a man thirst after living water the Lord is the fountain, John 7:37, “In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.”
II. “COME, YE BLESSED OF MY FATHER.”
A. As the Captain of our salvation, He invites to “come” follow Him, Matthew 16:24, “Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”
1. Those that come and serve the Lord will have great reward, Matthew 19:28, “And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”
2. Those that know the Shepherd’s voice will follow Him, John 10:27, My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:”
B. The Spiritual Believer will say of God’s Word…
1. Come, abide in me, 1 John 2:24, “Let that therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.”
2. Come, and occupy the throne of my heart, Ephesians 3:17-19, “That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; 19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.”
C. In the hour of our going to be with the Lord we will hear His words: “come, ye blessed of my Father,” Matthew 25:34, “Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:”
1. Because we had ministered to Him without knowing it, Matthew 25:35-36-39, “For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36- Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37- Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38- When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39- Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?”
2. We had ministered to His brethren, Matthew 25:40, “And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”
