WHAT IS TRUTH?
JOHN 18:28-40

Introduction:

Pilate had asked the question of the Lord, but he did not wait for an answer. The world puts a high premium on truth, but does not really want to hear it. You are here today expecting me to tell you the truth, but some become angry when they hear it. Others ignore the truth hoping that it will go away, while yet others accept it with great joy.
Let us consider the question, “What is truth?”
I. THE WORD OF GOD IS TRUTH
John 17:17, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”
A. The Word of God sets us up apart that we might believe, John 17:19, “And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.”
1. Hearing the Word of God sets us apart to trust and have faith, Romans 10:17, So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
2. Receiving the Word of God as the truth sets us apart unto the Lord, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 10Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 11And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.”
B. The Word of God, the Truth, has it affect on our lives, “And such were some of you.”
1. But ye are washed… by the Spirit of our God, Rev. 1:5, “And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,”
2. But ye are sanctified… by the Spirit of our God, Heb. 10:10, “By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”
3. But ye are justified… by the Spirit of our God, Romans 3:24, 28, “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 28Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.”
II. JESUS DECLARES HIMSELF TO BE THE TRUTH.
A. I AM the way, John 14:6, “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
B. I AM the Truth.
1. Jesus is full of grace and truth.” John 1:14, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”
2. Grace and truth came by Jesus Christ, John 1:17, “For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.”
3. John the Baptist bare witness of Jesus Christ, John 5:33, “Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.”
C. I AM the Life, John 11:25, “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:”
III. THE SPIRIT AND THE WORD POINT TO THE TRUTH, JESUS CHRIST
A. The Spirit of God bears witness to the incarnate Word, 1 John 5:6, “This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth.”
B. The Spirit bears witness with our spirit, Romans 8:16, “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:”
C. The Spirit of truth lives within us, John 14:17, “Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”
D. The Spirit will guide us, John 16:13, “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.”
CONCLUSION:
What is truth? The Truth is Jesus Christ. He it is who can save you soul if you will trust Him today. He is the way to heaven; He is the Truth: He is the Life and that life is eternal life by faith in Christ.
