SANCTIFICATION JUDE 1–PART 1

GREAT BIBLE WORDS

SANCTIFICATION
Part 1
Jude 1, “Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:”
Introduction:
Sanctification means to separate from profane things and dedicate to God; consecrate things to God; dedicate people to God; to purify; to cleanse externally; to purify internally by the renewing of the soul.
There is no difference in the Old Testament and New Testament languages. Both agree in their translation of the word “sanctify.”
This doctrine is not referring to “sinless perfection.” That is a perversion of the doctrine of sanctification. No where in the Bible is there taught “sinless perfection.” The word “perfect” in no instance refers to sinlessness.

I. SET APART BY THE WORD OF GOD
A. Sanctification is a relationship with God by faith in Jesus Christ, Acts 26:18, “To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.”
1. The Apostle Paul tells the church at Corinth that they were set apart in the name of Jesus Christ, 1 Corinthians 6:11, “And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.”
2. Being set apart they were called to be saints, 1 Corinthians 1:2, “Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:”
a. You were set apart by the hearing of the Gospel, 2 Thessalonians 2:14, “Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
b. You were called to be saints, Romans 1:7, “To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.”
B. Sanctification is by the Word of Truth, John 17:17, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”
1. A believer is to be distinct from the world’s sin, its values, and its goals, John 15:3, “Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.”
2. A believer has been washed, Ephesians 5:26, “That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,”
3. He is a purged vessel, 2 Timothy 2:21, “If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.”
C. Sanctification is by the Spirit of God.
1. The agent of sanctification is the Holy Spirit, Romans 15:16, “That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost.”
2. We are led by the Spirit to “mortify the deeds of the flesh,” Romans 8:13-14, “For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14- For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”

REGENERATION–JOHN 3:1-7

GREAT BIBLE WORDS
REGENERATION
John 3:1-7
Introduction:
Regeneration is a spiritual birth. Peter writes in 2 Peter 1:4, “Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.” We have become partakers of the divine nature of God by faith in Jesus Christ.
That is what the Lord Jesus was saying Nicodemus needed – the new birth. He needed to be born of God.

I. REGENERATION IS PICTURED AS BEING “BORN AGAIN,”
A. The concept of being “born again” = “FROM ABOVE.”
1. This is not a fleshly birth, v. 4; John 1:13, “Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”
2. It is a spiritual birth, vv. 5-6, “Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6- That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
a. The water of the Word of God, v. 5; 1 Peter 1:23, “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.”
b. He is washed with the Word, Ephesians 5:26, “That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,”
c. The fallen sinner CANNOT regenerate himself; he needs a divine operation by the Spirit of God, v. 6; Titus 3:5, “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;”
1) He has made us fit to partake of God’s inheritance, Colossians 1:12, “Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light:”
2) He has written our names in the Lamb’s Book of Life, Revelation 21:27, “And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.”
B. The concept is of God TRANSFORMING the heart, 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
1. By implanting a NEW principle of DESIRE, v. 17b. Old thoughts, old principles, and old practices, are passed away. Psalms 51:10, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”
2. By implanting a NEW principle of PURPOSE, Ephesians 2:10, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”
3. By implanting a NEW principle of ACTION, 1 Corinthians 13:11, “When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.”
C. This TRANSFORMATION made great differences in SAUL of Tarsus.
1. He believed the message of the gospel and was identified by faith with Christ, 2 Corinthians 5:14-15, “For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: 15 And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.”
2. He believer that he had been raised from the death to walk in NEWNESS of life, Romans 6:3-4, “Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4- Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life,”
3. He believed that Christ LIVED in him, Galatians 2:20, “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”
4. He GLORIED in the Cross of Christ, Galatians 6:14, “But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.”
5. He switched from a PERSECUTOR of Christ to a PROCLAIMER of Christ, Acts 9:5, 20-22, And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. 20- And straightway he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God. 21- But all that heard him were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests? 22- But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ.”

II. FRUITS OF REGENERATION
C. The former manner of life, Ephesians 4:22, “That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;”
D. Faith and love are seen, 1 John 4:7-8, “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8- He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.”
E. Holiness is the fruit and proof that one is born of God, 1 Peter 1:15-16, “But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16- Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.”
F. Righteousness the fruit and proof that one is born of God, Ephesians 4:24, “And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.”

CONCLUSION

Regeneration is a transition from spiritual death to spiritual life. Paul said in Ephesians 2:1, “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins.”
Regenerating grace creates a new world in the soul; all things are new. The renewed man acts from new principles, by new rules, with new ends, and in new company.

PROPITIATION–ROMANS 3:24-26

GREAT BIBLE WORDS

PROPITIATION
(ATONEMENT FOR SIN)
ROMANS 3:24-26
Introduction:
Propitiation is “that by which God is rendered propitious, i.e., by which it becomes consistent with his character and government to pardon and bless the sinner. The propitiation does not procure his love or make him loving; it only renders it consistent for him to exercise his love towards sinners.” Easton’s Bible Dictionary
Atonement is an Anglo-Saxon term, which means “a making at one.” It points to a process of bringing those who are estranged into a unity. Sinful man and the Holy God are brought together through the sacrifice of the Son of God as payment for man’s sins.

I. ATONEMENT IN THE OLD TESTAMENT
A. God provides a way for forgiveness of sin, Leviticus 17:11, “For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.”
B. God provided a substitute, Genesis 22:7-8, “And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? 8- And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.”
C. The Passover Lamb, Exodus 12:3, 5-6, “Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house: 5- Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats: 6- And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.”

II. ATONEMENT IN THE NEW TESTAMENT
A. It reveals God’s love for man, Romans 5:8, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
1. We did not love God, 1 John 4:10, “Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”
2. He loved us first, 1 John 4:19, “We love him, because he first loved us.”
B. Christ’s sacrifice for our sins, 1 John 2:2, And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.”
1. He was put to death for our sins, Romans 4:25, “Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.”
2. His blood was shed for our forgiveness, Matthew 26:28, “For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”
3. He bore our sins in His own body, 1 Peter 2:24, “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.”
4. He made purification for our sins, Hebrews 1:3, “Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;”
5. He is the propitiation for our sins, Romans 3:25, “Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;”
a. Through faith in his blood, Ephesians 1:6-7, “To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. 7- In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;”
b. To declare the righteousness of Jesus Christ, Romans 3:26, “To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.”
C. The nature of the Death of Christ.
1. He died specifically for us, Isaiah 53:6, “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
2. He gave Himself a ransom for all, 1 Timothy 2:6, “Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.”
3. To take away the sin of the world, John 1:29, “The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”
4. He died in our place, Isaiah 53:5, “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”
a. God made Him to be sin for us, 2 Corinthians 5:21, “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”
b. God, the Father, forsook the Son because of our sin, Mark 15:34, “And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

CONCLUSION
Jesus Christ is made the propitiation for our sins by becoming OUR SIN BEARER, 1 Peter 2:24, “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.” However, man has to make the decision as to whether or not to accept God’s forgiveness by trusting Christ as Savior.
Hebrews 2:17, Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation [Propitiation] for the sins of the people.

PRAYER–PSALM 34:15-18

GREAT BIBLE WORDS
PRAYER
Psalm 34:15-18
Introduction:
God’s Word contains much encouragement to pray. Yet, there are many Christians who do not pray regularly and effectively. Many pray and become discouraged, because they see no answers to their prayers. If prayer is not answered, you may be sure that there are reasons why this is so. Let dwell on what God says to encourage us to pray.

I. GOD STANDS READY TO HEAR AND ANSWER THE PRAYER OF HIS CHILDREN
A. God’s ears are open to us, Psalm 34:15-18, “The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry. 16- The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth. 17- The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. 18- The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
B. He hears the poor man’s cry, Psalm 34:6, “This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.”
1. He will answer, Psalm 91:15, “He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.”
a. He will deliver him, Psalm 37:40, “And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.”
b. He will honor him, John 12:26, “If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.”
2. The Lord is not far from His own, Psalm 145:18, “The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.”
C. The right spirit is necessary, Psalm 51:17, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.”

II. DO WHAT YOU CAN AND ASK GOD TO DO WHAT YOU CANNOT
Nehemiah 4:7-9, “But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites [Philistines], heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth, 8- And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it. 9- Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.”
A. In the day of trouble, Psalm 50:15, “And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.”
1. “I will deliver thee,” v. 17 (text), “The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.”
2. “Thou shalt glorify me,” Matthew 5:16, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
B. Put your burdens on Him, Psalm 55:22, “Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.”

III. SEEK THE LORD WHILE HE MAY BE FOUND
Isaiah 55:6, “Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:”
A. Do you understand? Psalm 14:2, “The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.”
1. David said that he understood, Psalms 27:8, “When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek.”
2. He understood the time to pray, Psalms 32:6, “For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him.”
B. Ask, seek, knock, Matthew 7:7-8, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8- For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.”
“The phrases signify to seek with earnestness, and diligence, and perseverance. The promise is, that what we seek shall be given us. It is of course implied that we seek with a proper spirit, with humility, sincerity, and perseverance.” —Barnes NT Notes.

CONCLUSION

JUSTIFICATION–ROMANS 3:19-31

GREAT BIBLE WORDS

JUSTIFICATION
Romans 3:19-31
Introduction:
When the trial of a prisoner has been completed, the judge or jury, as the case may be, declares him to be either not guilty, that is, “justified,” or guilty, that is, “condemned.”
Justification may be defined as “a judicial act of God in the which He declares the sinner free from condemnation, and restores him to divine favor. It takes place when the sinner trusts in Christ and His merits for salvation.” —Dr. E. Y. Mullins.
In other words, “justification” is God’s verdict.

I. THE BASIS OF JUSTIFICATION
A. What justification IS NOT, v. 20.
1. By the deeds of the Law no man is justified, Galatians 3:10-12, “For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. 11- But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. 12- And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them.”
2. Those that would live by the Law make Christ of no effect in their lives, Galatians 5:4, “Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.”
3. The overwhelming numbers of professing Christians are trying to persuade God that they are righteous through their good works, Matthew 7:22-23, “Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23- And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”
4. The purpose of the Law, Romans 7:7-9, “What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust , except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. 8- But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead. 9- For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.”
B. What justification IS, vv. 24-25.
1. It is the Gospel way of justification, John 3:14-15, “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15- That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.”

2. It is without the Law, Romans 3:28, “Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.”
3. The Law of God gives witness to justification by faith in Jesus Christ, Acts 10:43, “To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.”
4. Justification is BY FAITH in Jesus Christ, v. 26;
a. Because His work is perfect, Deuteronomy 32:4. “He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.”
b. Justification is by faith that it might be BY GRACE, Romans 4:16, “Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,”

II. THE RESULTS OF JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH
A. God DECLARES the sinner free from condemnation, John 5:24, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.”
B. God RESTORES the sinner to RIGHT STANDING before Him, Romans 8:1-3, “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2- For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3- For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:”
1. We stand in His Grace, Romans 5:2, “By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”
2. We are no longer under His wrath, Romans 1:18, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;”
3. We possess eternal life, Romans 5:17-18, 21, “For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) 18- Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. 21- That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.”
